For immediate release: 4 January 2014
Lohja,Finland– After Day 2 in the junior men's competition Turkey, Czech Republic,Austria and the Netherlands remain undefeated with two wins. In the junior women's groups, only Italy,Hungary and Estonia remain undefeated. However, they have all played only one game so far and will have two games to play tomorrow.
The Italian junior women's team skipped by Veronica Zappone is one of the early favourites to do well this week. They have had a busy season leading up to the event playing in the Stavanger Europeans as well as the Olympic Trials played in Füssen. The team's main goal for the season is to qualify to the Junior Worlds from this event.
The Estonian women have their sights set high as well as this is the fifth consecutive year that their skip Marie Turmann makes an appearance in this event. Also the rest of the team has played in the event previously.
Both Turkish junior men's and women's teams finished 3rd in their round robin groups last year and have had a very promising start to the event also this year, as they both remain undefeated after Day 2.
The new junior men's Spanish team has had an unfortunate start to the event with three losses, but they were already showing signs of improvement in their close evening game againstSlovenia, who eventually won the game 5-3. After two losses in the earlier rounds, the win was great news for the extremely young Slovenian team that is, in fact, the youngest team that has ever participated in the EJCC, with a lead that is just 9 years old.
The first games on Sunday start at 9.00 am local time. The Finnish Curling Channel will show games played on sheet C during all the rounds.
